JD.com launches ‘Asia No.1’ logistics center in Shanghai

JD.COM said today it has started operation of its logistics center in Shanghai ahead of a peak season for online shopping as the US-listed company steps up efforts to fight for consumers from rival Alibaba Group.

The warehouse facility, named "Asia No.1", is located in Jiading District, and is one of the largest and most advanced logistics facilities in the country.

Covering an area of 100,000 square meters, the first phase of the project is dedicated to sorting and transporting for medium sized merchandise.

November 11, or the so-called Single's Day, has become a shopping bonanza both for e-commerce sites and online shoppers. Last year, sales at JD on November 11 were US$1.6 billion. JD.com currently operates 7 fulfillment centers and 97 warehouses in 39 cities.

"JD's operation efficiency will be lifted after the new warehouse is put into use and delivery speed will also be further lifted," Liu Qiangdong, founder and chief executive officer said in a statement today. It will also serve third party vendors and suppliers besides serving its own delivery demand.
