Launch called off as Google warns Acer

ALIBABA and Taiwan's Acer yesterday canceled a scheduled release of a smartphone model which was supposed to run on Alibaba's Aliyun operating system.

The Aliyun platform is based on Linux codes and is also compatible with Google's Android system. Aliyun is also pre-installed with other social media software.

In a statement yesterday Alibaba disclosed that Google's notice to Acer said that if the phone with the Aliyun system is launched, the Taiwan firm will no longer be able to use the Internet giant's Android and their collaboration and other patent authorization deals would be called off.

Hangzhou-based Alibaba expressed "regret" over Google's decision. Acer's media official was not available for comment yesterday.

Aliyun, which was unveiled in July last year, integrates Alibaba Group's online shopping and payment service to ensure easier and more secure online transactions.

Alibaba's chief strategist Zeng Ming said in a recent interview that Aliyun hopes to be as strong as Android in China. The company believes the Aliyun system will raise the choices for consumers and handset makers.

The company expects the number of smartphone makers using its Aliyun platform to rise to five from two by the end of this year.
