Lenovo puts focus on China
LENOVO Group Ltd will expand market share by 2 or 3 percentage points in China, its most important market, within two or three years, the world's No. 4 personal computer maker said yesterday.
Lenovo, China's No. 1 PC vendor, will continue penetrating into overseas markets and plans to enter the mobile phone market in China.
Apple Inc, which opened its first retail store in Shanghai and plans to open 25 stores in China in future, won't be a threat to the Beijing-based company in the domestic market, Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo's chief executive, said yesterday in Shanghai.
"Apple's store number is only in single-digits in China but we have thousands of stores," said Yang during a press conference. "We understand our home market and we won't lose to any rivals here."
In 2009, Lenovo had a 30 percent market share in the domestic PC market, 1.2 percentage points more than the previous year. Lenovo plans to increase its domestic market share by 2 or 3 points due to demand in rural areas and among small and medium-sized businesses.
Globally, Lenovo's market share reached 10.2 percent at the end of June, ranking No. 4 behind Hewlett-Packard's 18.1 percent, Dell's 13.0 percent and Acer's 12.6 percent, according to International Data Corp, a US-based IT research firm.
This marked the first time that Lenovo had obtained a double-digit share of the global market, which is "crucial" to a global firm to improve brand awareness and expansion in overseas markets, said Rory Read, president and chief operating officer of Lenovo.
Lenovo's PC sales reached 8.34 million units in the second quarter, up 47.3 percent year on year, double the industry growth rate and the highest growth rate among the top five PC brands, according to International Data Corp.
Lenovo has also launched smartphone LePhone to enter the booming mobile Internet market. The 3G LePhone is regarded as a direct competitor of Apple's iPhone in China.
The cell phone market has higher profit margins and bigger market potential compared with low margins in the PC industry, analysts said.
There will be about 60 million 3G phone users in China by the end of this year, fourfold last year's level.
