Lenovo's market share surpassed HP's in Q3
CHINA'S Lenovo for the first time surpassed Hewlett-Packard's share of the personal computer market in the third quarter, an industry report showed today.
US research firm Garner said today that Lenovo grabbed the top spot with a 15.7 percent market share in the global PC shipments in the three months ending September 30, ahead of HP's 15.5 percent.
"Lenovo has achieved significant market share gains over the last two years at a higher growth rate than the regional average, with its aggressive pricing strategies," Gartner said in the report.
Lenovo's quarterly shipment stood at 13.8 million units, up 9.8 percent from a year ago, making it the only one among the top three vendors to see an annual growth.
HP's share in the three-month period was down from 17 percent a year ago and Dell's also fell to 10.5 percent from 11.2 percent.
In the third quarter, overall shipments declined 8.3 percent from a year ago to 87.5 million units as retailers were more focused on clearing out inventory in advance of Microsoft's Windows 8 release in the coming months.
Globally, the PC market has generally been sluggish with consumers' attention shifting to tablet computers and smart phones.
Lenovo is set to expand into mobile devices besides retaining its strong position in the PC sector.
Later this month it will officially launch four new notebooks, which can be converted into tablets running the Windows 8 operation system.
Seperately, another US consultancy International Data Corporation pointed out that HP remained in the pole position with a 15.9 percent market share, while Lenovo has closed its gap with HP, registering 15.7 percent share.
IDC reported an 8.6 percent globally.
