Lenovo’s new phone unit gets chief
LENOVO Group Ltd, which bought Motorola Mobility from Google Inc for US$2.9 billion, has appointed a China head of a new mobile phone business that will debut in April, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday.
Lenovo hopes to increase sales and improve profitability of the new handset business, including Motorola Mobility which lost US$1 billion last year. Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo’s chairman, expects to turn around the Motorola business within six quarters.
Zhang Hui, the former head of a Lenovo personal computer joint venture, will head the new Mobile Business Group in China. Lenovo will also restructure its business into three other groups covering PC, enterprise business and cloud computing, from April 1.
The Chinese MBG will focus on the mobile phone business in the world’s No. 1 cellphone market. The tablet computer and digital TV business will be integrated into the PC business division, Lenovo sources told Shanghai Daily.
