Licensed content through microblogs
ONLINE video company Youku Tudou Inc is to provide licensed content through the desktop and mobile platforms of microblogging site Sina Weibo to boost traffic for both sites.
Weibo will open a video section on July 1 containing popular tweets and resources of films and TV series, Liu Dele, president of Youku Toudou, said at the Fortune Global Forum in Chengdu yesterday.
Weibo users, currently around 500 million, will find information on video clips and make comments. Users can also get licensed content on Youku Tudou through links posted on Weibo.
The move is expected to attract more users, especially on mobile devices, for both sites, Liu said.
China's Internet companies may produce the world's leading business model tapping the country's large number of mobile phone users, information technology experts told the forum.
Charles Chao, CEO of Sina, said it was a trend for Internet companies and social media to use data to provide accurate, realtime and location-based advertisements targeting mobile users.
He said Weibo's cooperation with Alibaba, China's largest e-commerce company, aims to provide users with more accurate advertising information by using the e-commerce company's information. In April, Alibaba acquired an 18 percent stake in Sina Weibo for US$586 million.
Wang Chaoyong, CEO of Private Equity Group, said: "China Internet companies may not be good at inventing technology, but they are good at creating business models especially targeting China's vast number of mobile phone users."
