LinkedIn launches Chinese site
LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network, yesterday launched a beta version in Chinese language as it seeks to boost its presence in a nation which has the world’s largest user base.
Users can now access the Chinese version through Lingying.com, but will have to manually set the language to Chinese before logging in. It currently only accepts new registration through reference links from existing users.
The United States networking site is expanding its business in China through a joint venture with venture capital firms Sequoia China and China Broadband Capital, according to a statement.
The website’s English version has been available in China for more than 10 years, and It currently has more than 4 million users on the Chinese mainland.
Unlike other social networking sites, LinkedIn encourages users to complete their professional profile and education history and also allows them to endorse each others’ professional capabilities and expertise so that they might catch the attention of potential employers or headhunters.
LinkedIn could face competition from a number of domestic rivals. Sites such as Dajie.com and Lagou.com provide similar services to professionals in China, matching their resumes with job offerings and helping them connect with others in the same industry.
It also faces challenges from veteran providers of human resources solutions like 51job.com, ChinaHR.com and Zhaopin.com.
Li Zhi, chief researcher at Beijing-based Internet consultancy Analysys International, also said: “Chinese web users’ demand for serious professional social networking is not as strong as their demand for mass media social networking, and Sina’s Weibo and Tencent’s WeChat already cater to most of their demand.”
