Little cheer for Apple鈥檚 trade on old phones
APPLE Inc kicked off a trade-in service for iPhones and iPads in China to boost sales in its second-biggest market but the initial feedback has not been encouraging.
Apple users can trade in their old iPhones and iPads at Apple retail stores in China and avail of discounts on the new iPhones and iPads. The amount of discounts will be decided by “specialists” at the stores, Apple said on its Chinese website.
But the offer has not enthused Apple fans with netizens writing that the stores are only offering a discount of 10 percent, or about 500 yuan (for an iPhone 4S), which is less than 10 percent of the cost of the cheapest model of iPhone 6.
Others said Apple was only offering a discount of 250 yuan (US$40) for an iPhone 4.
On Taobao.com, China’s biggest online auction website, a used iPhone sells for about 2,000-3,000 yuan.
The trade-in service is only available in Apple’s directly operated retail stores, including stores on Huaihai Road M. and in Lujiazui in Shanghai.
Foxconn Technology Group, Apple’s contract maker for iPhone and iPad, will buy and re-sell the used devices as part of the program, media reported citing unidentified sources.
