Low-cost way to cut emission needed
THE transfer of low-carbon technology between developing economies can play a key role in getting poor countries involved in the fight against climate change, a Chinese climate official said yesterday.
"We have to work out a way to cut emission at low cost," said Li Junfeng, director of the National Climate Change Strategy Research and International Cooperation Center.
"But industrialized countries which own certain technologies won't provide them at low cost, citing the protection of intellectual property rights," Li told the South-South Global Assets and Technology Exchange Convention in Shanghai.
"Sure we are not against intellectual property rights protection, but we must find a low-cost way."
Li pointed out that Chinese companies already achieved lower cost in industries such as solar and wind than Western partners and could be an ideal technology provider to countries in Africa through the technology exchange.
