Market to decide if WeChat 'should be charged or not'
THE government will not interfere with the popular mobile phone messaging software WeChat and "let the market decide whether the service should be charged or not."
"Government agencies have not interfered and will not interfere with WeChat's operations (and) it's up to the business owners to decide whether it will be charged," Zhang Feng, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said yesterday.
"So far, we support Tencent's recent decision not to charge users for the service."
Tencent, the WeChat developer, said in an official statement earlier this month that it will not charge users.
