Meizu eyes wireless link for easier life
MEIZU Telecom Equipment Co joined hands with Haier and Alibaba to allow users to access and control over 100 home appliances and gadgets through a wireless connection, Meizu said yesterday.
Meizu debuted its Life Kit system that is able to connect to more than 100 devices through its smartphones, including a smart weight scaler that can detect and record fat percentages and a light bulb which can change colors.
“It’s time for Chinese firms to establish (their) own standards of connection,” said Li Nan, vice president of Meizu.
“We can’t wait for foreign firms to define the standard (like Samsung and Apple).”
Meizu devices also support Haier’s smart home appliances and Alibaba’s cloud service, Li added.
Meizu’s alliance follows rival Xiaomi’s US$200 million investment in Midea to co-develop connected smartphone and home appliance devices.
The integration between smartphones and home appliances is part of the Internet of Things, a national strategic sector generating a revenue of 600 billion yuan (US$97 billion) last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said.
Meizu, which sold a record 1 million smartphones in December, also launched a new Meizu Blue model costing 699 yuan to directly compete with Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 model. The new model, with a 5-inch screen and 13-megapixel camera, will start selling online next month.
