Microsoft beefs up China operation

MICROSOFT Corp plans to hire more than 1,000 Chinese employees by June 30 next year, the world's biggest software maker said today in Beijing, just one month before the release of its new Windows operating system.
The annual research investment in China will increase 15 percent in coming years from current US$500 million, according to Microsoft Vice President and Chairman of Asia-Pacific Research Zhang Yaqing.
In the new fiscal year ended June 30, Microsoft will recruit more than 1,000 people in China, half of them to be college graduates. Currently it has 4,500 employees.
"In this new era, China will become the source of global innovations," said Ralph Haupter, Microsoft corporate vice president and chairman of Microsoft China, in a statement yesterday.
"Through comprehensive devices and services combined with cloud computing, Microsoft is entering this new era by leveraging our advantages."
Over the next five years, Microsoft will build its presence in more than 20 cities across 15 provinces by expanding local teams and enhancing local management, Microsoft said.
