Microsoft searches for talent
MICROSOFT Corp will recruit 20 percent more engineers to do research and development on search services in China in 2010 after Google Inc announced its exit from the Chinese mainland market last month, the United States-based software giant said yesterday.
Meanwhile, Microsoft opened a 700 million yuan (US$103 million) research center in Shanghai yesterday, the first Microsoft technology park outside the US. The Microsoft China Shanghai Technology, in the city's Zizhu Science-Based Industrial Park, now has 1,500 employees.
The local facility and a Beijing park, which is scheduled to open this year, represent Microsoft's long-term commitment in China, said Zhang Hongjiang, chief technology officer of Microsoft's Asia-Pacific Research and Development Group.
"Cloud computing and search services are two fastest growing sectors in our R&D plan in China," said Zhang.
Google's closure on the Chinese mainland might open the door for Microsoft for its Bing service, industry insiders said.
Microsoft has a team of 500 people in China developing its Bing search services, which accounts for 17 percent of the company's total R&D team in China.
The search development team will add "at least 100 people" in 2010, Zhang told Shanghai Daily.
Microsoft has launched several local services since it started Bing in June in China. The firm will launch more classified search services such as tourism and social networking services in China.
Microsoft China's research team is also working on new search services for China, Japan and South Korea markets, Zhang said.
Microsoft cooperates with several giants such as China Telecom, Tencent and Alibaba Inc on Bing services.
Google shut its mainland-based search engine, google.cn, last week. Visitors to Google.cn are automatically redirected to the Chinese-language service based in Hong Kong.
In 2009, Google accounted for about 36 percent of search revenue in China, with Baidu holding 58 percent, according to Analysys International.
