Mobile access boosts China's web user base

INTERNET users through smart phones and mobile devices continued climbing in the past year while China's total number of web users reached 564 million by the end of December, a latest industry report showed today.
China added 50.9 million new web surfers in the past year, and the number of web visitors through mobile devices contributed to the majority of the increase, the China Internet Network Information Center said in a research report.
The number of mobile Internet users added 18.1 percent from a year ago to 420 million and it remained the most widely used Internet access method among domestic web users.
The proportion of mobile Internet users against the total Internet population in China climbed to 74.5 percent from 69.3 percent at the end of 2011, while web accesses from desktop computers and laptops both declined.
The number of online shoppers who placed orders through mobile devices was 2.36 times that of 2011 with the popularity of smart tablets and easier wireless Internet access.
The report was concluded from a nationwide CNNIC survey that covered 60,000 residents in 31 provinces and cities.
