Mobile devices used for over half of all Alipay’s holiday transactions

THE number of mobile payments on Alipay accounted for more than half of the total payments processed by the company during the week-long lunar New Year's holiday this year.

More than 50 million Alipay customers used the mobile payment service to pay online orders, credit card bills, utility fees and taxi fares during the seven-day holiday, the company said over the weekend.

The total transaction amount for paying off credit card debts with the mobile service reached 7.1 billion yuan (US$1.17 billion) — 10 times that of the same period a year ago.

E-Hongbao is also a popular trend among Alipay users as a total of 200 million yuan worth of red packets were given out through Alipay's smartphone applications.

Alipay, the third party payment service founded by Alibaba Group, has about 240 million registered users, among which 100 million have made payments through its smartphone applications. It makes up about 75 percent of domestic mobile payment share, according to Internet consultancy iResearch Inc.
