Mobile production boosted as capacity moves to China
MOBILE phone production in China, the world's No. 1 handset market, continued to grow on huge domestic demand and foreign giants moving capacity to Asia, the industry regulator said today.
In the first two months, the production of mobile phones in China gained 2.7 percent year-on-year to hit 157.6 million units, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The domestic demand of phones, especially smart phones, continues growing, analysts said.
China will surpass the United States in smart phone sales this year. China is predicted to grab a 20.7 percent share of the global market this year, surpassing the US share of 20.6 percent, according to International Data Corp, a US-based IT consulting firm.
In 2016, China will hold a 20.2 percent market share, followed by the US at 15.3 percent and India at 9.3 percent, IDC added.
Low-cost Android smart phones under US$200 were a key growth driver in China, IDC said.
Windows Phone, which debuted this month in China, will also start selling at 1,000 yuan (US$158), according to the system developer Microsoft.
On the other hand, many foreign giants are moving capacity from Europe and the US to China, such as Finland-based Nokia.
