Motorola ready for return to China
LENOVO Group Ltd will reintroduce Motorola-brand phones to China from February after an absence of two years to compete in the high-end segment and battle domestic rivals like Xiaomi Corp and Huawei Technologies, the Beijing-based company said yesterday.
The Motorola Moto X, Moto X Pro and Moto G will debut in China, the world’s biggest mobile phone market. One of them will be available in the domestic market by February 19, the start of the Chinese New Year, with the other two models available later, Liu Jun, Lenovo’s executive vice president, said at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Lenovo and Motorola are jointly attending the world’s biggest electronics show for the first time.
The two companies will hold a press conference on January 26 to release details about the reintroduction of the Motorola phones into China where they were absent from the domestic market since Lenovo said it would acquire Motorola Mobility two years ago. Lenovo, the world’s biggest personal computer maker, completed the acquisition of Motorola Mobility for US$2.91 billion in October from Google Inc.
Lenovo said it expects to turn Motorola to the black within four to six quarters.
The reintroduction of Motorola in China will help Lenovo grab market share in the high-end segment and compete with Xiaomi and Huawei, industry insiders said.
Within 3-5 years, the mobile Internet and enterprise services will be the two fastest growing areas for Lenovo, chairman Yang Yuanqing has said.
