Mr Black comes to mobile screens
CHINA’S classic cartoon character Black Cat Detective, or Mr Black, will appear in a newly created mobile game, giving a lift to homegrown game developers in domestic and overseas markets.
Shanghai Animation Film Studio and Giant Interactive said yesterday they will develop a mobile game based on “Black Cat Detective,” who turned 30 this year.
“The animation studio is a holy place for Chinese cartoons,” said Xu Bo, vice president of Shanghai-based Giant. “Black Cat Detective is a start for us to build world-class games based on Chinese culture.”
The China-developed games, based on legends like “Journey to the West” and swordsmanship, have accounted for a major part of the domestic game market whose revenue jumped 38 percent to 83.2 billion yuan (US$13.6 billion), according to International Data Corp, a US-based research firm.
The Shanghai Animation Film Studio has made 500 films and owned the intellectual property rights to 600 characters including the Monkey King.
In 2013, China’s game exports totaled US$1.82 billion, up 219 percent year on year, according to IDC.
