Nation's high court hears appeal in anti-monopoly Internet suit

The Supreme People's Court today heard Qihoo 360 Technology Co's appeal of a lower court judgment against it in the lawsuit filed by rival Tencent over illicit competition.

Tencent's suit against Qihoo is regarded as the most important anti-monopoly lawsuit in the nation’s Internet sector.

The legal war between the two Internet giants dates to early 2012, when Qihoo launched computer safety software to block users from installing other value-added services related to Tencent's popular QQ online chat tool.

Tencent was asking for 125 million yuan (US$20.5 million) of compensation from Qihoo, and Guangdong Province Higher People's Court ordered Qihoo to pay 5 million yuan in April of this year.

Qihoo didn't accept the ruling and appealed to the Supreme People's Court.

Tencent argued in court that Qihoo blocked users from installing Tencent's related services and thus blocked users from viewing and subscribing to its premium membership services, thereby causing economic losses.

Qihoo argued that it was defending its own business interests and was preventing Tencent from exploiting its monopolistic position in the online chat market.
