Nokia snaps up social network for travelers
NOKIA has acquired Dopplr, a social network for travelers, to strengthen its push into offering Internet services.
The deal is the latest acquisition for the world's top cell phone maker in Internet services as it seeks new growth areas outside the maturing handset market.
Nokia said it would continue to run Dopplr separately from its current services offering.
Nokia bought the company from private shareholders. Dopplr was co-founded and led by Marko Ahtisaari, who used to work at Nokia and is the son of Nobel Peace Prize winner Martti Ahtisaari.
A Nokia spokeswoman said the price "was a fraction" of the 10-15 million euros (US$14.7-22 million) estimate mentioned in reports.
