Nokia to stick to Symbian platform

NOKIA Corp will continue to invest in the Symbian platform, especially in the medium- and entry-level sectors, though it will launch its Windows phone next year, the company said in Beijing yesterday.

"We will increase investment in the S40 platform for the Chinese market, our strategic market," said Chris Leong, senior vice president of Nokia China, Japan and Korea.

The S40 is one of Nokia's Symbian platforms designed for the entry-level market.

In China, more than 70 percent of handset users have phones which cost less than 1,000 yuan (US$151) each, analysts said.

In February, Nokia said that it would use Microsoft's Windows phone system for its smart phones, which are expected to debut next year.

It is widely expected to be the third choice besides Apple's iPhone and Google's Android phones, industry insiders said.

Nokia launched its latest flagship smart phone E7 in Beijing yesterday, with Microsoft's Office suite and Exchange tool.

Nokia, the world's biggest phone vendor, plans to sell more Symbian phones before it transfers to the Windows system.

Nokia has sold 200 million Symbian handsets globally.
