Nokia-Siemens to raise research team for LTE
NOKIA Siemens Networks will increase its research team by 50 percent in China this year to focus on developing future technologies including 4G LTE (long term evolution), Chief Executive Rajeev Suri said yesterday.
The world's No. 2 telecommunications equipment vendor also announced yesterday plans to build a new manufacturing line in Shanghai to assemble and test products to meet the TD-LTE standard, a 4G technology developed by China.
By the end of this year, the joint venture between Finland-based Nokia and Germany-based Siemens will hire more than 3,000 people for its research division in China compared with a hiring of 2,000 in 2009. The new researchers will account for 50 percent of Nokia Siemens' total work force. They will be based at six research centers nationwide including Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou, and will focus on new micro-wave, optical transmission and LTE technologies, the company said.
"China is the center of Nokia Siemens' research globally," said Suri at a press briefing in the Finland Pavilion at the Expo site.
Cooperating with Samsung, Nokia Siemens has finished the first commercial data call on the TD-LTE network - a key step to commercialize the new technology.
TD-LTE, an evolved technology from TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access), offers a high speed network that is 10 to 20 times faster than 3G, experts said.
