Online gaming firm NetEase says 3rd quarter profit up 29%

CHINESE online gaming operator NetEase said third quarter profit grew by 29 percent from a year ago to 1.05 billion yuan (US$169 million) with a strong performance from its self-developed online games.

Sales added 23 percent annually — 2.5 billion yuan — by the end of September, the company said in a stock exchange filing today.

Online gaming revenue added 21 percent and made up 84 percent of overall income, and advertising income grew 22.9 percent.

China’s online desktop games market size grew 21.4 percent from a year ago to 14.2 billion yuan in the third quarter, research firm Analysys International said.

Tencent has the largest share at 49.2 percent with Netease following with 16.3 percent.

NetEase CEO and Director William Ding said in a statement that the company will continue to broaden the platforms for its traditional and mobile Internet products and service.

NetEase earlier this year launched mobile instant messenger Yixin through a joint venture with China Telecom to catch up with rival Tencent’s popular WeChat, which already has more than 300 million subscribers.

Yixin plans to bank on China Telecom’s extensive network to grab users and offer value-added service such as music streaming and gaming to smartphone users.
