Online sellers sideline Similac

SOME online vendors on Taobao.com, one of China's biggest online trading platforms, said they had stopped making proxy purchases of Similac-brand powdered infant formula after US-based Abbott Laboratories said it was recalling about 5 million containers due to possible contamination by beetles or larvae of the bugs.

Abbott China said the China market was not affected by the recall because most of the Similac infant powder sold through official distributors here is made in Singapore, with some in New Zealand.

But the product has been a hot item on Taobao.com through vendors who buy the best-selling baby formula from the United States.

Among the online vendors, a Guangdong Province-based seller, "Rainbow Baby," on Taobao.com told Shanghai Daily that the Similac baby formula wouldn't be available in her shop for at least several days. In the past 30 days, she sold 26 cans of Similac Advance baby formula directly delivered from the US.

"We don't know whether any of the products were included in the recall list, but so far no buyers had complained to us about purchasing problem formula," said the seller.

However, some online sellers were still selling the formula, claiming that their goods were safe and not included in the recall list.

A seller surnamed Pan, who was running an online shop offering proxy purchase of various baby formulas, said he had checked carefully the lot number printed on each can of formula with the recall list issued on Abbott's official website.

Pan, who sold 172 cans of Similac in the past 30 days, said his batch of goods was stocked before Abbott announced the recall, and he didn't plan to import another batch until Abbott claims they are safe.

"Each customer will be told to check the lot numbers with the recall list, and they can return the goods to me if they find any problem," said Pan.

Abbott said in a news release on Wednesday that the US Food and Drug Administration had detected the "remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced" in one of its manufacturing facilities.
