Over 500m Chinese use mobile Internet
OVER two-thirds of Chinese mobile Internet users accessed online services via 3G or 4G mobile broadband networks, GSM Association, a global telecommunications industry association, said yesterday in a report.
More than 500 million Chinese subscribed to mobile Internet services at the end of 2013, according to market watchers.
Top Chinese dot-com firms, including Alibaba.com, Tencent Inc and Baidu.com Inc, have launched various services which enable mobile users to do online shopping like Alibaba’s Taobao service, play multi-player games downloaded from Baidu’s platform and enjoy social services such as Tencent’s WeChat and QQ applications.
The GSMA also said that by the end of last year, the mobile user base of 1.7 billion in Asia accounted for half of global mobile users and it was expected to grow to 2.4 billion in 2020.
“Asia-Pacific is at the forefront of mobile subscriber growth and service innovation, reflecting its position as home to a diverse range of markets and people,” Anne Bouverot, director-general of GSMA, said in the report. “Advanced super-fast mobile services provide essential services such as education, healthcare and banking in the developing world.”
The majority of Asia-Pacific mobile subscribers are in four major markets of China, India, Japan and Indonesia.
