Over 80% of smartphones unprotected
More than 80 percent of smartphones remain unprotected from malware and attacks, US-based Juniper Research said in a report yesterday.
Android phone users in China, the world’s biggest mobile phone market, are most often attacked by mobile malware, industry officials said. This is due to an explosion of mobile malware over the last two years and low adoption of security software by consumers.
One reason for this is low consumer awareness about online attack on mobile devices and a widespread consumer perception that the price of security products is excessive, according to Juniper Research.
“Cyber criminals are moving their focus from personal computers to mobile platforms across both enterprise and consumer segments,” the report said. “There will be more than 1 million malware in the market by the end of this year.”
Worldwide, the Chinese mainland accounted for 31.7 percent of global infected users of mobile devices this year, ahead of Russia and India.
Android phone users are vulnerable to malware spread in third-party applications and Internet downloads, said Netqin, a Beijing-based mobile security firm.
In the second quarter, more than 60.6 million Android phone users were infected by mobile malware, up 4.5 times over the same period last year, according to Analysys International, a Beijing-based information technology research firm.
But the situation seems to be improving, according to analysts.
By 2018, 1.3 billion mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, may have mobile security software installed, up from around 325 million this year, according to Juniper Research.
