PCB maker chips in with plant investment

AT&S, Europe’s biggest printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturer, has invested US$447 million to build a plant in Chongqing as the firm expands into the booming semiconductor sector, the company said yesterday.

The Chongqing integrated circuit (IC) substrates plant marks the company’s “strategic focus” on this business segment, said the Austria-based firm. The 125,000-square-meter substrates plant will start production in 2016.

IC substrates is a component connecting PCBs and chips during the manufacturing of semiconductors. They are used in consumer electronics and industrial devices.

In the six months ended in September, AT&S’ revenue grew just 0.7 percent from a year ago to 302.1 million euros (US$375 million). Its net profit jumped 29.5 percent from a year ago to 28.4 million euros.

China’s IC market revenue jumped 17 percent year on year to 212.6 billion yuan (US$34.7 billion) in the first nine months, according to the China Semiconductor Industry Association.

AT&S has also invested US$700 million to build a PCB plant in Shanghai.
