PPTV debuts naked-eye 3D smartphones

INTERNET video firm PPTV debuted its first naked-eye 3D smartphone yesterday in Beijing, which was also the first of its kind to be unveiled by a Chinese brand.

The new PP.King7S, featuring a naked 3D display, 6-inch screen, eight-core processor, 13-megapixel camera and Hi-Fi sound effect, costs 2,699 yuan (US$424), including a one-year membership for video content and a 6-gigabyte mobile data specifically for PPTV video streaming.

“It’s a 3D cinema in your pocket,” said Dang Yi, PPTV phone division’s head.

The Shanghai-based video website, which was acquired by Suning for US$2.5 billion in 2013, now offers 300 3D movies and 100 3D games for consumers online.

Previously, firms like Amazon and Sharp had launched naked-eye 3D smartphones which got a lukewarm market response because of a lack of 3D content and challenges to chip and screen technology.

PPTV has strong content resources and a huge user base of 370 million registered users, 31.35 million PC users and 13.4 million mobile daily active users on average. PPTV is also working with China Unicom to offer users free mobile data.
