PPTV eyes sales of 1m TVs within one year
INTERNET video firm PPTV expects to sell 1 million smart TVs within one year since it debuted TV products in June, the company said yesterday.
The Shanghai-based video website will use aggressive pricing strategy, offer free videos including exclusive sports content and bank on parent firm Suning’s strong distribution channels to meet the sales target.
PPTV, which was acquired by Suning for US$2.5 billion in 2013, offers a 43-inch TV costing only 1,799 yuan (US$283) and a 55-inch model for 2,799 yuan — cheaper than models from arch rivals Letv and Xiaomi.
“It will be a price war in the smart TV market,” Chang Jiang, TV business head of PPTV, said yesterday. He said price and high-quality content will be key points.
The three new PPTV TVs — a 43-inch model and two 55-inch ones — will be available in the market from next week through online and offline channels of Suning and Alibaba.
PPTV aims to sell 1 million smart TVs by June. Comparatively, Letv sold 1 million smart TVs in the first half and predicted to sell 3 million of them this year.
PPTV has strong content resources and 370 million registered users. With Suning — China’s biggest offline home appliance chain retailer — as its parent, PPTV will develop 60-inch or bigger TVs, Chang said.
