Popular papers on Hanwang's online store
WENHUI-XINMIN United Press Group and Hanwang Technology signed an agreement yesterday to digitize two of the city's most popular newspapers for Hanwang's users.
Under the deal, Wenhui Daily and Xinmin Evening News will be available on Hanwang's online bookstore. Users can download the two newspapers free for three months. They will be charged 0.5 yuan (7 US cents) for each paper after the period, according to the Wenxin Group, also the parent of Shanghai Daily, and Hanwang.
Shanghai Daily has also signed with Hanwang to provide similar services which will be available online after a "short period tech adjustment." The newspaper has signed a deal with Amazon to provide digitized version on Kindle, which can also be read on Apple's iPhone and iPad.
"We are glad to see that news content is distributed through multimedia methods," said Chen Li, a senior official at the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau. "It represents the future trend of reading."
Hanwang will push more newspapers and magazines under the Wenxin Group online and also cooperate with other domestic media firms. Both sides will also cooperate on digital content copyright protection in future, said Liu Yingjian, chairman of Hanwang.
Over 50 newspapers, 200 magazines and 100,000 books are digitized on Hanwang's bookstores now, according to the Shenzhen-listed firm which raised 1.3 billion yuan in a share sale in March. It will use the proceeds on projects including e-book reader and handwriting recognition on portable devices.
