Prices of 3D printers fall to become affordable
A desktop 3D printer costing under 10,000 yuan (US$1,639) and easy for ordinary consumers to use debuted yesterday in Shanghai, marking a trend to make latest technologies affordable and available for family use.
The new Da Vinci 1.0 AiO (All-in-One) 3D printer, which costs 8,999 yuan in China, features scanning, editing and 3D printing that allow consumers to do printing without possessing professional skills or software, according to developer Taiwan-based XYZ Printing.
“Our products, with extraordinary cost performance and affordability to consumers, will enable 3D printing technologies,” said Simon Shen, chairman of XYZ Printing.
Most professional 3D printers cost up to several million dollars. Even 3D printers for family use used to cost 30,000 yuan or more, analysts said.
The Taiwan company produces the Da Vinci devices in Thailand at a monthly rate of about 20,000 units, according to XYZ Printing, a 3D printing subsidiary founded in 2013 by Kinpo Group.
US-based 3D printer giants have also recently launched cheaper version products for family use such as the MakerBot Replicator Mini, which costs 10,999 yuan on Chinese online shopping site JD.com.
The global sales of 3D printers will hit 2.3 million units in 2018, almost 10 times the figure in 2015, with most sales coming from ordinary consumers, according to market estimates.
