Profits at leading online game firm up 25%

CHINA’S leading online game operator and portal owner NetEase reported a 25 percent increase in profits to 1.1 billion yuan (US$178.4 million) in the second quarter after online gaming income jumped.

Income in the three months ended June 30 climbed 20 percent from a year ago to 2.4 billion yuan, the company said in a stock exchange filing today.

NetEase’s online gaming income jumped 23.5 percent to 2.1 billion yuan, making up 88 percent of its total sales during the quarter. 

“We’re planning to release more mobile games and use mobile devices to extend the reach of our PC games to lure more players,” said William Ding, chief executive officer and director, in a statement.

China’s online gaming market size grew 26.6 percent annually in the second quarter to 20 billion yuan, Internet consultant iResearch Inc said.

Mobile gaming growth more than doubled over the same period, according to iResearch, with smart phones and tablet devices gaining popularity among game players.
