Prospects abound in VR content sector
CHINA lacks content for use in virtual reality devices and this absence will open up opportunities for content and software firms to tap, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday.
Virtual reality, which allows users to view video contents in 360 degrees with vivid 3D and interactive experience, is set to be widely adopted in the gaming, sports, advertising and real estate sectors, according to Jietu Software, a Shanghai-based startup firm. It added that VR can also be incorporated in major event broadcasts like the coming military parade in Beijing next week.
China’s VR device market revenue is forecast at 720 million yuan (US$112.4 million) in 2016, fourfold the level of this year, according to research firm Analysys International.
“Demand is booming in the VR market but there are fewer than 10 professional teams focusing on VR (in China),” Molly Jia, marketing director of Jietu Software, said during a high-tech demo show held by the Shanghai Pudong Software Park yesterday.
Baidu, Lenovo, Sony, iQiyi and Letv have all planned to unveil VR devices. Youku Tudou, China’s biggest online video website, plans to invest heavily on VR content production to tap the new technology.
