Qihoo ordered to compensate Tencent

QIHOO 360 Technology Co was ordered to compensate 5 million yuan (US$806,452) to Tencent for illicit competition, and also has to publish apologies in major media for 15 straight days, the Guangdong Province Higher People's Court ruled yesterday.

Chief judge Zhang Xuejun said, however, there wasn't enough evidence to support Tencent's demand for 125 million yuan in damages.

Qihoo said yesterday it would appeal to a higher court.

Both the defendant and the plaintiff were ordered pay part of the legal costs, the court said.

Tencent filed the lawsuit in early 2012 demanding 125 million yuan in compensation from Qihoo which launched a software to block users from installing other value-added services related to Tencent's online chatting tool.

Last month the Guangdong court rejected Qihoo 360's lawsuit against Tencent to prevent the latter from exploiting its monopolistic position in the market. Qihoo sought 150 million yuan in damages and a public apology from Tencent.
