Qualcomm drives into auto industry
QUALCOMM Inc, the world’s biggest mobile chip designer, aims to expand into the automotive industry by developing chips and wireless charging systems for cars, the company said in Beijing yesterday.
The US-based company sees 20 percent of cars to have Internet connections in 2018 and be linked to an intelligent transport system and a smart grid.
Compared with other firms, Qualcomm has a strong technological background as it’s the No. 1 chip designer for phones running on Google’s Android system, which has become popular in new-generation cars, analysts said.
A BMW sedan equipped with Qualcomm’s wireless charging system was displayed yesterday in Beijing. The car can run 140 kilometers after fully charging for three to four hours.
The US firm says its Qualcomm Halo which charges wirelessly has an advantage over other firms like Tesla which offer charging stations based on cables.
Qualcomm said last month it would establish a new investment fund of US$150 million in China to focus on local startup companies dealing with mobile technologies.
Qualcomm sponsors and offers technical support for the FIA Formula E Championship, an electric car race, which opened yesterday in Beijing. The Formula E, seen as electric car’s F1, will hold 10 races globally in a year from September in cities including Beijing, Berlin and London.
