R&D center for chips
QUALCOMM Inc has invested several million dollars to establish a research and development center in Shanghai focusing on the chips for "qualified and affordable" 3G handsets, the United States-based chip designer said yesterday.
Qualcomm also will strengthen cooperation with Chinese partners to launch the products such as high-end smartphones and smart books, small-size laptops with long battery life, to meet the surging demand for 3G models and portable devices in China.
It's the second R&D center for Qualcomm in China, besides a CDMA center in Beijing.
Meanwhile, the number of Qualcomm's Chinese partners more than doubled to 55 in the past 18 months, including Lenovo Group Ltd, ZTE Corp, TCL Corp and Haier.
Qualcomm is also seeking opportunities in smartphones and smart books through Snapdragon chips, which are faster and offer long battery life.
