Rule lifts buying of Bluetooth headsets

A revised traffic rule has sparked a frenzy by users to buy Bluetooth earphones online, resulting in several websites running out of stock of the product.

E-commerce websites such as 360buy.com and Amazon China have sold out their stocks of Bluetooth earphones. Sellers of branded Bluetooth earphones on Taobao, China's biggest online auction website, couldn't provide the products until next week because of surging demand.

The demand was sparked by the revised traffic rule, effective from January 1, which forbids drivers from talking on their mobile phones without using the Bluetooth headsets while driving. Drivers who break the regulation will be punished.

Popular Bluetooth earphone brands like Jabra, Plantronics and Nokia are sold out online. Bluetooth headsets that cost under 300 yuan (US$48) are not available.

Many stores on Taobao said they will only be able to start selling and delivering Bluetooth earphones from January 16 to 18.
