SMEs' e-commerce set to increase

THE e-commerce revenue of Chinese small and medium enterprises is expected to account for 1.5 percent of the national gross domestic product this year, an indication that they are adopting information technology, the industry regulator said yesterday.

In 2009, their e-commerce revenue is forecast at 1.99 trillion yuan (US$292.64 billion), a 20-percent annual growth. Of the total amount, exports are expected at 860 billion yuan.

The revenue is expected to account for 1.5 percent of GDP and 0.13 percent of national GDP growth, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. However, it didn't provide comparative figures.

The SMEs are encouraged to adopt more IT and software tools to improve efficiency in 2010, the ministry said, and Zheng Xin, a senior official, disclosed that SMEs will benefit from favorable policies such as lower taxes.

In 2009, around 1.3 million jobs will be created by the SMEs' e-commerce activities and about 10 to 11 percent of the new jobs will be in towns nationwide. Each 1-percent rise in SMEs using e-commerce applications will create about 40,000 new jobs, the ministry calculated.

By the end of September, China has 10.23 million SMEs, accounting for 99 percent of the total firms in the country, according to the ministry.
