SMIC extends deal
SEMICONDUCTOR Manufacturing International Corp yesterday said it will extend a foundry agreement with Spansion Inc on flash memory chips, including a prepayment from Spansion of US$50 million.
Both sides will extend their current foundry arrangement to expand 65-nanometer capacity and include the making of Spansion's 45nm flash memory based on a more advanced technology, according to SMIC, the Chinese mainland's largest made-to-order chip maker.
The prepayment, made in three tranches over the next 12 months, will help SMIC procure semiconductor equipment and wafers.
Spansion will begin transferring its 45nm flash technology this month, with production expected in the first half of 2012.
