Sales of iPhone 5 spark 67% increase in income

APPLE Inc's China revenue jumped 67 percent year on year in its fiscal quarter ended on December 29, boosted by iPhone 5 sales and improved distribution channels, the company said yesterday.

In the quarter, Apple China's revenue was US$6.8 billion, up 26 percent quarter on quarter. Sales of iPhone doubled in the period compared with a year earlier.

It was the first time for Apple to post an independent performance result for China, its second-biggest regional market after the US and the world's No. 1 mobile phone market.

In December, Apple started sales of iPhone 5 on the Chinese mainland in a tie-up with China Unicom and China Telecom. A total of 2 million iPhones were sold within the first three days in the domestic market.

Morgan Stanley said in a recent note that if Apple were to cooperate with the country's biggest telco China Mobile, sales in China for the US firm are likely to boom.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, visited China for discussions with government officials and top executives of China Mobile this month.

Meanwhile, Apple expanded its distribution channel in China by opening four Apple Stores in the quarter to bring the total store number to 11 in the region.
