Sales of wearable devices soar
THE global wearable device market soared nearly 127 percent year on year in the fourth quarter amid growing popularity of fitness trackers and the Apple Watch, a US-based research firm said yesterday.
Sales of wearable devices hit 27.4 million units globally in the last quarter of 2015, up 126.9 percent from a year ago. The top-five vendors were Fitbit, Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung and Garmin, according to IDC.
“Triple-digit growth highlights growing interest in the wearables market from both end-users and vendors,” said Ramon Llamas, IDC’s analyst.
Sales of wearable devices are set to surge because the form factor will move from watches or bands to clothing, footwear and eyewear, IDC said.
The Apple Pay service, which debuted in China last week, will fuel demand for the Apple Watch in the country, the world’s biggest mobile phone market, analysts said. Apple Pay, which drew 38 million users within 12 hours after its China debut last week, will boost the popularity of Apple Watch.
Fitbit led the market with an 8.1 percent share in the quarter followed by Apple’s 4.1 percent and Xiaomi’s 2.7 percent, according to IDC.
Xiaomi’s Mi Band is popular in China because the company focuses on cheaper fitness trackers costing below 100 yuan (US$15.30).
