Sales propel ZTE and HTC into top 5

TWO Chinese firms were listed as among the global top five smartphone vendors by the end of the third quarter, while Nokia was the big loser falling out of the top five for the first time, an industry report said yesterday.
Shenzhen-based ZTE and Taiwan-based HTC ranked No. 4 and No. 5 while Samsung and Apple expanded market shares to stay in the top positions, according to International Data Corp, a US-based IT research firm. ZTE said it aims to become one of the top three handset makers by 2015.
By the end of third quarter, Samsung still dominated the market with a 31.3 percent share from 22.7 percent share a year ago. Second-placed Apple had 15 percent share thanks to booming iPhone sales, followed by RIM's 4.3 percent, ZTE's 4.2 percent and HTC's 4 percent, IDC said.
Nokia was the big loser in the quarter as it fell out of the top five for the first time. In the second quarter, Nokia, which used to lead smartphone sales two years ago, ranked No. 3, IDC said previously.
In the third quarter, Samsung's sales jumped 100.4 percent annually to 56.3 million units.
