Samsung forced to apologize after report
Samsung yesterday apologized to Chinese consumers and promised to improve after-sales service for two smartphones after China Central Television alleged that the two models have “serious design flaws” that were not included in the warranty.
Samsung, which has around 20 percent share in the Chinese smartphone market, promised to extend the warranty period by a year for Galaxy S3 and Note 2 models produced before November 30, 2012. The world’s biggest mobile phone vendor will also refund consumers who paid for repairs at its authorized service centers and give users free new models if it can’t fix the problems after two repairs, Samsung said in a statement on its China website yesterday.
“We apologize for the problems to Chinese consumers. We will strictly obey the Chinese law and rules and protect consumer rights in future,” Samsung said.
In a report on Monday, CCTV revealed that the problem involving the Galaxy S3 and Note 2, probably caused by a memory chip, was not covered by Samsung’s warranty. Some users found the chip caused a system crash in their phones and caused them to pay 800 yuan (US$131) to 2,000 yuan for repair.
Samsung became the second company, after Apple Inc, to apologize to Chinese consumers in the wake of the CCTV report.
