Samsung takes on rivals with new models
SAMSUNG yesterday unveiled its new Galaxy S flagship models in China that it hopes will help it regain its market share in China, the world’s biggest mobile phone market.
The high-end models Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge models, rivals to Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, reflect Samsung’s ambition to reclaim its throne as the undisputed global smartphone leader.
The models, featuring slim body and wireless charging, will debut in China tomorrow. Samsung did not reveal the prices, but it was expected to sell them from 5,288 yuan (US$853).
“The smartphone market is filled with fierce competition,” said Park Jae-soon, Samsung Electronics China’s president. “It represents the best combination between advanced technologies and fashion design.”
China now accounts for one third of global smartphone sales, which makes it the world’s most influential market, said Park.
Samsung was losing the domestic market share to Chinese rivals offering price-aggressive products, said Tay Xiaohan, an analyst with US-based research firm International Data Corp. Samsung’s market share in Chinese smartphone market was 12.1 percent in 2014, making it No. 2 behind Xiaomi’s 12.5 percent.
