Samsung to boost social responsibility activities in China

SAMSUNG Electronics, whose revenue jumped 50 percent in China last year, will increase investment in research and development and social responsibility starting this year, the South Korea-based firm said in Beijing today.

“We are developing new programs to support innovation in China,” said Eric Yan, vice president of Samsung Electronics China.

In one effort it’s helping support, a national science and innovation contest called Solve for Tomorrow, targeting middle school and university students, began yesterday in Beijing. The contest, with themes of saving energy, environment protection and health, was co-organized by Samsung, China Association of Science and Technology and the Communist Youth League.

In 2012, Samsung Electronics China’s revenue was US$14.3 billion, growing 51 percent year-on-year. Samsung invests about 6 percent of annual revenue on research and development globally and in China. In 2012, it spent US$10.8 billion on research globally.

Samsung, which will kick off its new flagship model Galaxy Note 3 in China today, is the country’s No. 1 smartphone vendor.

By the second quarter, Samsung led domestic smartphone sales with a market share of 18.3 percent, followed by Lenovo and Coolpad, according to US-based research firm International Data Corp.

Samsung will also increase investment supporting rural regions, education, social welfare and environmental protection in China starting this year.

The science and innovation contest will last from September to December in five major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Harbin.
