Search engine market balloons in Q2

CHINA'S online search engine market size grew 26.6 percent quarter on quarter in the second quarter after a 4.7 percent dip in the first three months of the year, the latest industry report shows.
The size of the country's search engine grew 62 percent year on year to 7 billion yuan (US$1.1 billion) in the three months that ended June 30, according to a research report released by Beijing-based Internet consultancy Analysys International today.
"The second quarter is traditionally a peak season for search engine marketing and advertisers have a very stable budget for keywords searching advertising," commented Analysys International's researcher Dong Xu.
Baidu continues to take the leading position with 78.6 percent market share by the end of the second quarter, trailed by Google China's 15.7 percent, according to Analysys International.
Smaller players like Sohu's Sogou and Tencent's Soso are stepping up efforts to attract more advertisers with technology and product upgrades, although both still only hold single-digit shares.
