Shake-up in LCD sector

THE Chinese mainland is expected to surpass Japan and become the third-biggest production base of large-area LCD panels in the world this quarter, a US-based information technology research firm said yesterday.

Large-area LCD panels are used in consumer electronics such as televisions, tablet PCs, notebooks and monitors.

South Korean makers continue to be the leaders in large-area LCD production, accounting for approximately half of global output, followed by Taiwan's and the mainland's manufacturers, according to Shawn Lee, senior analyst of DisplaySearch.

"The fact that China' mainland will pass Japan may indicate the beginning of a phase in which the mainland plays a more important role in the global flat panel display industry," Lee said.

On the mainland, new 6th-generation and 8th-generation LCD panel plants are being built, which feature higher technology and larger production compared with the current 5th-generation plants, experts said.

In the first quarter, the mainland's LCD panel production was 2.7 million units per month, compared with 3.2 million units per month from Japanese makers. In the second quarter, the mainland's production will increase to 3.4 million units compared with Japan's 2.3 million units, according to DisplaySearch.
