Shanghai leads telecom data nationwide

SHANGHAI’S mobile penetration rate and data traffic consumption lead the country nationwide as two of the city’s citizens own three mobile phones on average, the local industry regulator said yesterday.

At the end of 2013, Shanghai had a mobile user base of 32.2 million and more than 20 million of them accessed the Internet through their phones, according to the Shanghai Communications Administration.

Shanghai’s data traffic consumption surged 143 percent year on year in 2013, doubled the nation’s level of 71 percent, Chen Jiechong, chairman of the communications bureau, told an annual local telecommunications forum.

Shanghai has built a complete network of fixed-line and mobile communications, including various technologies such as Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G.

“The popularity of smartphones and lower telecommunications cost have made Shanghai a real wireless city,” said He Jianming, vice general manager of China Telecom’s Shanghai branch.

To boost Internet coverage for students, Shanghai Telecom will provide a Wi-Fi network for all local universities by the end of this year, six years before the national deadline of 2020.

China Mobile, which debuted 4G services in Shanghai, will launch 300 models of 4G phones by the end of this year. The carrier, the world’s biggest by users, will also reduce 4G fees.

Participants at the conference also highlighted the hot topic of mobile security.

“With high mobile penetration rate, people should be careful of malware applications and spam messages,” said Fang Binxing, an online security expert and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
