Shanghai ranked No.1 for online shopping
SHANGHAI'S online shopping environment was ranked first among all domestic cities on factors like the its economic situation, population, consumer spending and income, in a report compiled by China's largest online shopping site Taobao.
The report covered 2,300 domestic cities, divided them into six levels with Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen belonging to first-tier cities, Taobao said in its online shopping environment report today.
Most of the mid-western cities belong to the fifth or sixth tiers according to Taobao's ranking, in contrast to better online shopping environments at coastal provinces like Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong.
Higher dispensable income as well as a better logistics network caused the gap between less developed markets in the mid-western regions, the report pointed out.
Nearly 35 percent of first-tier Internet users have shopped on Taobao in the past year while that figure falls to around 23.4 percent in second-tier cities. However, new buyers in fifth and sixth tier cities rose 107 percent and 151 percent respectively over the past year, in contrast to an only 21 percent increase in new online shoppers among first-tier cities.
Taobao estimates that the market still has large potential with online retailers extending their service to inland cities.
