Shanghai revs up broadband speed to 16Mbps

SHANGHAI'S average broadband bandwidth will increase to 16 megabytes per second (Mbps) by the end of this year from current 12 Mbps, making the city the fastest in broadband connections in China.

China Telecom said today subscribers to its faster fiber-optic network will total 2.5 million, or 70 percent of the city's total broadband family users. At present, 2 million Shanghai homes have installed the fiber-optic network.

Local broadband service providers have been criticized for their low speed connections and higher prices. Two years ago, a Beijing-based research firm said Shanghai was the city with the slowest broadband network in China, said Shanghai Telecom, the city's biggest fixed-line phone operator.

"After huge investment and several network upgrades, Shanghai is expected to take a lead in broadband services," said Hua Ruiqiang, Shanghai Telecom's marketing director.

China Telecom's average broadband bandwidth in Shanghai will top 50 Mbps by 2015 and catch up with South Korea and Japan, Hua said.
